Interview: Software Engineer

Kelly Cuevas is a sofware engineer at Nantum AI. Kelly uses her experience to implement best practices to design and execute scalable solutions and the team is lucky to have her!

How did you first hear about Nantum AI?

I first heard about Nantum AI through a recruiter from LMC, a talent consultancy that is solely focused on the Climate Technology sector.

What drew you into the sustainable technology industry?

Mission-driven work has always been important to me. I try to do what I can on a personal level to promote sustainability, and the idea that I could use my technology skills to have a broader impact was hugely appealing to me.

What’s the biggest misconception about the work you do?

The biggest current misconception is that AI will replace software developers. One of my favorite takes on this is that AI is not going to replace software developers, but software developers using AI will replace those who are not.

Where do you see this industry in 5-10 years?

Hopefully empowering stakeholders at all levels with the tools to manage resources in a way that is not only sustainable, but profitable and frictionless. There are some people who understand sustainability measures as something that they are being mandated to do so that others can profit at the expense of their own time, money, and/or comfort. I’m excited to be part of a movement in technology to prove them wrong.

What advice would you give a young student considering a career in sustainable technology?

Go for it - there is no better time than now!

What’s something you do outside of work that helps you in your daily role at Nantum AI?

I’m a flutist, and I play regularly in local orchestras. In addition to being a great way to take a break from the computer and use your brain in a different way, there’s a lot of overlap between how you function as a member of the core woodwind team within the orchestra and functioning as a member of an engineering team within an organization. For both, you are constantly honing your craft so that you can contribute to your team in meaningful ways while staying agile and adjusting to those around you as you work towards the greater goal of creating a fantastic experience together.
